PayPal Launches First Non-Hosted Payment Service

2005-06-20 09:45:00

PayPal on Monday launched its first non-hosted payment suite, which gives small and medium-size online businesses the ability to provide more payment options for customers.

PayPal Website Payments Pro offers tools that allow retailers offer shoppers more choice in how they pay for items, including credit cards, a PayPal online account or by phone, fax or mail.

The Express Checkout capability in the suite gives people with PayPal accounts a three-click process to buying products. The Direct Payment API, on the other hand, lets merchants accept credit-card transactions just as they would for traditional merchant accounts.

The last piece of the suite, Virtual Terminal, supports phone, fax and mail orders by providing merchants with an online interface for manually entering credit-card transactions through the PayPal system.

"The launch of Website Payments Pro is a direct result of feedback from our customers, who were looking for more flexibility when integrating PayPal and more control over the checkout process," Stephanie Tilenius, vice president and general manager of PayPal's merchant services business, said in a statement.

Website Payments Pro is the company's first non-hosted payment suite. PayPal customers are directed to the PayPal site momentarily to log in and confirm payment, and then are automatically redirected to the merchant website to complete checkout, PayPal said. As a result, merchants have more control over the buyer checkout process.

The new product costs $20 a month and a per-transaction rate of 2.2 to 2.9 percent, plus 30 cents.

PayPal is owned by online auction company EBay Inc., San Jose, Calif.
