Wireless Gaming Seen As Top Mobile Data Apps

Wireless gaming will become the most common type of wireless data application in 2005, according to a study released Thursday (Jan. 27) by market research firm IDC.
Downloading ring tones is the most widely-used wireless data application, the study found. But wireless gaming will overtake ring tones in 2005 and, by 2008, will generate almost $1.5 billion in revenues annually.
In addition, the study noted that revenue from gaming subscriptions will grow increasingly important in the next few years and eventually will become a major source of revenue for wireless operators and game vendors, the study said.
A leading factor in the change is the transition from single-user games to community gaming, the study said. It cited two gaming tournaments that were wildly successful that prove that point.
