EarthLink Inc. on Monday launched a virtual private network service that targets small and midsize businesses looking for secure network access for traveling workers and employees working from home or remote offices.

The Atlanta-based Internet service provider is offering both client-based and web-based VPN products, which are powered by Positive Networks, a provider of managed remote access services.

The EarthLink VPNLink client provides network access to remote computers. The VPN WebLink product provides access through any computer with a web browser.

The service, which is offered on a subscription basis starting at $100 a month, provides access to corporate-network resources, such as file sharing, applications, e-mail and a company's intranet.

Positive Networks, based in Overland Park, Kan., provides technology that lets information-technology managers centrally manage all policies relating to security, resource controls and end-user experience. The company also provides tools for monitoring PCs and laptops accessing the corporate network, as well as anti-virus, anti-spyware and other security services.
