Kazaa, one of the most popular file sharing programs, revved to version 3.0 Monday, adding an integrated peer-to-peer (P2P) Internet phone service.

Kazaa 3.0 now includes Skype, the free P2P calling service that claims over 13 million users worldwide. The newest edition of the file-sharing software, which is distributed by Sydney-based Sharman Networks, also sports enhanced search capabilities and a trial membership with blog service provider TypePad.

Sharman's chief executive officer, Nikki Hemming, defended Kazaa, one of the file-sharing programs blamed by media content companies for enabling illegal downloading of music, movie, and software files. In February 2004, for instance, the recording industry's Australian association, MIPI, raided the homes and offices of employees of Sharman.

"Despite narrow-minded attempts by others to stymie P2P technology through litigation, boycotts, and legislation, we remain committed to delivering on the promise of peer-to-peer," Hemming said in a statement. "And with the recent U.S. Federal Appeals Court decision affirming that peer-to-peer software is legal, we expect to continue innovating and enhancing the experience for Kazaa users."

In August, a U.S. District Court of Appeals ruled that Kazaa competitors, Morpheus and Grokster, do not violate American copyright laws.
