PayPal has joined forces with Cloudmark in the escalating war against phishing attacks. The companies announced today that the anti-fraud component of Cloudmark SafetyBar will be made available free of charge to PayPal customers who use Microsoft Outlook for e-mail.
"Website and e-mail notifications from financial institutions of fraud attacks to more to scare people than to help them," said Cloudmark CEO Karl Jacob, "and our goal is to just get the fraud out of the inbox and make the customer safe."
SafetyBar has the potential to cut customer interaction with phishing and other fraud attacks to zero. According to Jacob, many attacks are so subtle that if a message is simply viewed in the preview window they will be activated. "Getting the attacks out of the inbox and away from users will help to re-establish trust between them and their e-commerce vendors and financial institutions," he said. Jacob acknowledged that Cloudmark is in discussions with other financial institutions to enable them to offer the anti-fraud product.
Customers will be offered the total Cloudmark SafetyBar package as well, including its anti-spam feature. The pricing will be the same as for any other Cloudmark customer at $3.99 per month. Part of the agreement also allows any Cloudmark customer to pay for the product using their PayPal account.
